2013 Capisce Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre (GSM)
Samuel's Gorge proudly embraces 'old vine' Grenache as a staple in our diet. Most of you have now been charmed by our vintage Grenache and its extension to both Samuel's Gorge reserve blends; Kaleidoscope Horizons and Mosaic of Dreams. Grenache is fascinating as a stand alone variety and equally beguiling in the way it dances with other varietals.
Inspired by my love for the Southern Rhone, this release is a reference to what is known as a GSM; Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre.
With discernible Shiraz weight and extra time in barrel this Capisce shows coffee grind, choc-topped Granita biscuits and liquorice strap on the nose. Then come the sweeter aromatics; Old Gold rum & raisin and boiled sweets, the kind of redolence that would lure you into the lolly shop. Those sweet memories then weave into the medley of lifted herbaceous aromatics, taking me back to the gnarly rosemary and sage studded limestone hills of Southern Rhone's Aix En Provence.
This surprisingly rich wine is freshened on the palate by notes of wild raspberry bramble, then finishes with mallee honey, molasses and an earthy savoury char.
Capisce 2013 GSM is perfect for the break of winter and the onset of spring. I recommend a hearty beef ragout with rough cut pappardelle or rabbit tagine with prune and almond.
