2017 Mourvèdre

2017  Mourvèdre

They say a good wine begins in the vineyard, long before it makes its way to the winery. The Mourvèdre vines can be demanding and difficult because of their long, slow ripening period, making it a variety much more susceptible to unseasonal weather and bird damage. It does however thrive under blue skies and sunshine – perfect for coping with that burst of heat we received late in the 2017 vintage. This spike of warm weather allowed the late ripening fruit to reach its full potential and with a gentle guiding hand from the wine team a delicious wine was crafted.

Like swirls of smoke in an opium den of bygone times this wine takes you to a faraway place. The intoxicating scents of cured meats, incense and syrupy cherries are only the beginning of the journey. As you sip more earthy and animalistic characters steal the show. The sweet char of caramelised meat and the spiced notes of fresh cut timber are brought together with the tingle of Szechuan pepper. Mourvedre is a variety that can easily lean towards the more savoury side, but this wine is tempered with satisfying amounts of soft plum and bramble. The 2017 vintage is a beautiful balance of the ethereal and the earthly. A wine to be savoured yet shared.

This wine should be enjoyed with food cooked over fire; be it an open bonfire on a clear, crisp night or a bustling, hazy Korean barbeque joint right in the middle of the city. Either way, embrace the smoke.
